German defender remains quiet on Old
Trafford speculation
The Mirror is reporting of Mats Hummels angry reaction to continual rumours surrounding his future with Borussia Dortmund as Manchester United continue to hover regarding a potential move to England either now or in the summer. The Dortmund captain is tiring of the constant questions around his next move, as a transfer is seemingly more and more likely to be this summer and not in January.
The German World Cup winner has been linked with a move to Manchester United on and off for years, but particularly over last summer and constantly ever since. A move to United (or England at the very least) seems inevitable sooner rather than later, but with Dortmund battling relegation in the Bundesliga we will certainly have to wait until the summer for that to become a reality. It’s also worth noting that plenty of players (Wesley Sneijder or Arturo Vidal for example) have seemed set for a move to the Theatre of Dreams only for such a transfer to never transpire, so we shouldn’t bet our house on a deal yet.
Hummels has been asked the question it seems like almost every day about his future and upon Bild asking him yet again he did not take kindly to that particular line of question, giving stinging responses.
“Are you looking for a headline?” No, I will keep it the way I’ve been doing it for seven years. I’ll let everything come to me and just look forward only to the start against Leverkusen and the second half of the season.“I’m really completely relaxed. I really only think about what I contribute on the pitch and in the dressing room, that we get better and move as quickly as possible from the bottom of the table.”
Despite our insistence to see Hummels join forces with the Louis Van Gaal revolution at Old Trafford, it’s good to see a bit of loyalty in football, something all too rare nowadays in the age of money and mercenaries. The German will fit right in with the values of Old Trafford, in an age where every transfer is about the next pay cheque rather than the old-fashioned ideal of the fulfilment of a dream.
His commanding presence is clearly needed at the club too. His ability to lead the line as a complete defender is sorely needed, and the acquisition of such quality would allow Van Gaal to have confidence in his back line. More than just David De Gea anyway. In spite of the recent criticism of the safe style of play his team has adopted, he could rely on Hummels to play the ball out from the back with the likes of Marcos Rojo and lead a more free-flowing side. It’s something the fans have certainly demanded for quite a while.
The Old Trafford faithful have demanded a marquee defensive name to balance out an attack heavy squad, and they don’t come any bigger than Mats Hummels does at the moment. The whole world saw his prowess at the World Cup over the summer in Brazil, and paired with someone like the athletic Rojo it would allow the Manchester United defensive unit to thrive the same way the German’s unit did when Hummels partnered Jerome Boateng at the World Cup.
It’s an exciting proposition for United, and it’s one that already has the Red Devils fans buzzing. But with any move put off to the summer at the earliest, we know better than to get ahead of ourselves in any transfer pursuit. This one has a while to run yet football fans…
